Task Force on Strengthening Democracy Statement on Reintroduction of the Freedom to Vote Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Task Force on Strengthening Democracy Co-Chairs Representatives Colin Allred (TX-32), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), John Sarbanes (MD-03) and Nikema Williams (GA-05) issued the following statement on the bicameral reintroduction of H.R. 11, the Freedom to Vote Act – the legacy commitment of congressional Democrats to fight corruption and strengthen democracy:
“In the 2022 midterms, democracy held – pulled back from the brink by Americans of all political stripes who soundly rejected election denial and extremism. However, across the country, we are still seeing intense, coordinated efforts to roll back the most basic foundations of a free society – including the sacred right to vote.
“The Freedom to Vote Act meets the moment we are in. This historic piece of legislation addresses critical threats to our democracy by safeguarding Americans’ access to the ballot box, protecting the integrity of our elections, prohibiting the practice of partisan gerrymandering and ending the influence of dark money in our politics.
“The Task Force on Strengthening Democracy is committed to channeling Americans’ desire for a stronger, more unified democracy into meaningful progress. We will continue to fight back against all attempts to suppress the voice of American voters and work to promote a government that is truly of, for and by the people.”
As the top legislative priority for congressional Democrats, the Freedom to Vote Act has been designated H.R. 11 in the House of Representatives and S. 1 in the Senate, where its introduction was led by Senator Amy Klobuchar.
The Freedom to Vote Act is supported by a diverse, non-partisan coalition comprised of more than 170 leading organizations in the voting rights, civil rights, good government, faith, environment, consumer protection, gun safety and labor communities.
